The Living White House › New Edition of Popular Title Released

The White House Historical Association has released a new edition of the Living White House, a behind-the-scenes history of how the President’s House and grounds have been used for family life, state occasions, and presidential business for more than 200 years.

The Living White House

One of the association’s most-widely distributed titles, the award-winning Living White House has been in print continuously since 1966 with over 1 million copies sold. The new edition has been expanded to include the story of life in the Obama White House with updated text by former White House curator Betty Monkman and more than 45 new photographs.

“The latest edition of The Living White House continues to tell the story of the historic White House and the fascinating families who have lived there,” said Neil W. Horstman, President of the White House Historical Association. In her opening letter, First Lady Michelle Obama writes that it is her “sincere hope that the Living White House will provide insight into this storied home and the fascinating families who have lived here.”

The new edition gives an inside look into the day-to-day activities of President Obama and his family in the White House. As in earlier editions, such traditions as State Visits, the White House Easter Egg Roll, the presidential Thanksgiving turkey pardon, and commemorative tree plantings are featured, but the unique style of the Obama family is also presented with coverage of the first Kid’s State Dinner, the new kitchen garden, and recent contemporary art acquisitions made for the collection.

Author Betty C. Monkman began her nearly 40-year career in the White House Office of the Curator during the Lyndon Johnson administration. Having served eight presidents, Ms. Monkman witnessed much of the history she relates. She is also the author of The White House: Its Historic Furnishings and First Families and editor of the White House: An Historic Guide.
